Title: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Book Cover Re-Design
Challenge: Design a book cover using mixed media—photography and illustration—that visually represents the themes of rebellion, freedom, and mental health in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Process: I chose this book because its themes deeply resonated with me. After analyzing the key ideas—such as eerie tension, rebellion, and social commentary on mental health—I brainstormed ways to visually capture those feelings. Given the book's 1962 publication, I aimed for a retro, vintage aesthetic. I photographed abandoned buildings to represent the isolation and confinement of a mental institution. For the illustrations, I incorporated an eagle to symbolize freedom and wisdom, integrating it into the typography to reinforce the book's themes of liberation. After creating several design iterations, I gathered feedback to refine the final version.
Impact: The cover aims to immediately convey the book’s themes, making it enticing for readers while also visually capturing the essence of the story. The design seeks to draw readers in, encouraging them to explore the powerful narrative within.
Tools/Techniques: Pencil, paper, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator.
